Daily Habits to Improve Your Overall Wellbeing

Improved Wellness

Daily habits are an essential part of fostering your personal well-being. When we think of our well-being as a puzzle, each positive habit is a piece that helps make up the full picture.

When thinking of my own habits, I choose ones that uplift my mind, body, and spirit. For instance, each morning, I start my day by setting an intention or goal for the day which helps clear my mind before a busy day. Then, I like to incorporate some movement for my body while putting on music or journaling to uplift my spirit.

In this post, I will share several daily habits you can begin to incorporate into your routine to promote a higher level of well-being and wellness.

Why are healthy daily habits important for your well-being?

Having healthy daily habits is important for your well-being because they can help you work toward your goals, instill stability and self-control, and reduce stress and anxiety.

When you are intentional about your daily habits and the outcomes you wish to achieve, you can begin to develop a routine of good habits that promote wellness for your mind, body, and spirit.

When developing a new habit, keep in mind that this will require focus and intention, with most habits taking weeks or even months to form. You may even want to create a list of bad habits that you wish to replace with ones that promote physical and mental health benefits. When going through this process, remember that forming a new habit requires mindfulness and consistency.

Daily habits for your mind

When choosing a daily habit for your mind, think of what is going to help you reduce your stress and anxiety levels. These are activities that you can use to find peace and center yourself. Here are several ideas to get started:

Listen to music

Listening to music has many benefits, such as pain management, stress reduction, and mood enhancement. Finding music that speaks to you is instrumental in improving your well-being.

Music is also a fun way to connect with friends and family by sharing recommendations and exploring new artists or genres. Get creative with music and the ways you listen or discover it. You might even find analog music moves you more, with its warm and rich sound, and throw on a record or cassette tape!

Create a morning routine

As I said earlier, creating a morning routine is an essential part of my mind’s well-being. Instead of grabbing for your phone first thing in the morning, consider journaling or establishing your desires for the day first. You might even find joy in carving out time to make yourself a healthy yet delicious breakfast or packing a well-balanced lunch you can look forward to.

Daily habits for your body

Finding habits that are good for your body can also positively impact your mind, as our mind and bodies are more closely connected. Start boosting those endorphins with these habits:

Get some fresh air

According to the American Psychological Association, spending time outside in nature has a bounty of cognitive benefits, such as stress reduction, improved attentiveness, mood enhancement, and lower risk of psychiatric disorders.

Unfortunately, studies show that the average American spends over seven hours in front of a screen each day. With this staggering number in mind, try trading several minutes of screen time for time outside each day, increasing the amount of time each day. Reap the rewards of nature and even get to know your neighborhood better.

Find enjoyable physical activities

Regular physical activity is key to your wellness. It can improve your mood and reduce disease, and it can be intrinsically fun. It’s important that you find an activity you truly enjoy and have at it!

Fun activities you could try are yoga, hiking, biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, rollerblading, pickleball — really anything that suits your level of ability and interest. Keep in mind that you don’t have to be amazing at whatever you choose, instead, focus on how it makes you feel.

Daily habits for your spirit

No matter what your personal beliefs are, there is evidence that spirituality can help you overcome challenges, deepen your sense of meaning or purpose, and even improve your mental health. Here are a couple strategies to get started:

Find a creative outlet

Tapping into your creative energy is a great way to connect with the world around you. Use what inspires you in your creativity. For instance, if nature inspires you, you might try painting a picture of your favorite nature trail. Likewise, if another artist inspires you, you might try emulating their work.

Explore spiritual practices

When choosing a spiritual practice to incorporate into your daily life, choose one that helps you move beyond your internal self and feel connected to the world around you. These habits might include prayer, mindfulness, meditation, or journaling. They could even be as simple as finding someone to share spiritual insights with and discuss important ideas in a judgment-free environment.

As you can see, there are many daily habits you can incorporate into your routine to promote wellness and a higher level of well-being. Need help figuring out how to begin? Get connected with me today!

What clients are saying…

While working at a local non-profit, I was really struggling to communicate effectively. I was very short-tempered, and felt overshadowed, under appreciated, and ignored. Working with Dr. Washington helped me in so many ways. I’ve developed a deeper sense of calm, learned to appreciate aspects of myself for the true strengths that they are, and can now center myself and be present with what I’m working on — as well as those I’m working with.

Dr. Washington made me feel like someone saw me, at a time when I really needed it. And as a woman of color in the workplace, it was especially valuable to have help from a coach who understands the complexities that can bring.

— Talia Stinson

For the greater part of the last 10 years, I’ve struggled to feel content with my life. I’ve succeeded professionally but haven’t had much balance in other areas like my social and spiritual life. Dr. Washington helped me find tangible ways to better prioritize what I felt I had to do against what I wanted to do, gave me permission to show myself some grace, and has helped me shift my perspective to one more focused on gratitude.
